Cult Coffee Roasters began in 2014 as a café squeezed into a converted vennel on Buccleuch Street, close to the university and the Meadows. A handful of friends who wanted to serve good coffee and simple food built a following before turning their attention to roasting, and the business now runs a separate roastery unit in Newbridge supplying the café and wholesale accounts across the country. Beans are roasted in small batches from Monday to Wednesday rather than to a fixed house blend, with the selection changing through the year. The Buccleuch Street shop still functions as the original café, serving espresso and filter coffee alongside pastries, and selling bags of beans for customers to take home. The narrow room fills with students and locals through the working week.
