Kalpna has served vegetarian Indian food from St Patrick Square since 1975, drawing on Gujarati, Punjabi and South Indian cooking rather than a single regional style. The dining room sits just off Nicolson Street, a short walk from the university, and the kitchen has stayed meat-free throughout its run while continuing to prepare thali, dosa and a rotating lunchtime buffet. Menus lean heavily towards dishes that are naturally vegan, and the restaurant has kept its own recipes rather than following a standard curry-house format. Table service continues in the evenings, with beer and wine available alongside the food. Under current ownership since 2015, the restaurant has kept its original name and much of its regular clientele, some of whom have been coming since the 1990s.
