David and Karen Smith have run Devonshire Fine Art from 9 Church Street in Modbury since 1988, occupying a Victorian building in the town centre. The gallery deals in antique paintings, prints and antiquarian maps, and offers a picture framing service covering oil paintings, works on paper, embroideries and needlework, as well as bespoke box frames for three-dimensional keepsakes. Framing work includes hand-made English swept frames and washline mounts, produced on-site rather than sent out to a third party. Stock changes as pieces sell and new consignments come in, so the gallery does not operate to a fixed collection in the way a museum might. Customers bring in family pictures and inherited pieces for restoration and reframing alongside browsing what is on the walls for sale. The business has remained under the same family's ownership and at the same Church Street address since it opened, without a second branch elsewhere in Devon.
