Fiorentini's has traded from 67-69 Strand Road in Derry since Ignazio Fiorentini, then 13, arrived from Italy in 1912 to work at the Iannarelli ice-cream parlour that previously stood on the same site. Ignazio later opened his own cafe nearby with his brother Victor, and the family business has since passed through three generations, continuing to make ice cream on the premises to the family's recipe. The shop still functions as a traditional ice-cream parlour and cafe, serving sundaes, milkshakes and hot drinks rather than a full restaurant menu. Opening hours vary through the week, broadly 10am-5pm Monday to Thursday, extending slightly on Friday and Saturday, and 11am-5pm on Sunday, and can shift at short notice, so phoning ahead is advisable. It is one of the last family-run Italian-Irish ice-cream parlours of its type left in Derry, a trade once represented by several immigrant families in the city through the twentieth century.
