Faller the Jeweller was founded in 1883, when 23-year-old Wilhelm Faller opened his first shop at 25 Ferryquay Street in Derry and later anglicised his name to William. The business now trades from 12 Strand Road, where it has been run since 1971 by Noel Faller, the third generation of the family, who qualified in gemmology through the Gemmological Institute of Germany and the Gemmological Institute of America. A goldsmiths' workshop occupying two floors above the shop was set up in 1988 to manufacture Faller's own jewellery ranges on the premises, in addition to the repair work the firm had carried out since the nineteenth century. The workshop team designs and makes rings, pendants and other pieces in gold and silver on site, rather than sourcing finished stock from outside suppliers. The shop opens Monday to Saturday, 9:15am to 5pm, and is closed Sunday. It remains family-owned and trades from a single Strand Road premises.
