The Free Trade Inn stands on raised ground above St Lawrence Road, with a beer garden that looks straight down over the Tyne to the bridges and the Gateshead quayside. Once tied to the old Scottish and Newcastle brewery, it now trades as a free house and was named CAMRA's Tyneside Pub of the Year in 2013. Seven cask ales rotate through the small semi-circular bar most weeks, alongside changing keg beers, ciders and a run of Belgian bottles. There is no fruit machine and no television, just a free jukebox and a split-level room with wooden floors and high stools. Pies come from a butcher in Amble rather than a caterer, and a quiz runs on Wednesdays. Pizza also arrives on Wednesday nights from a stall that sets up in the beer garden.
