Anth Atkinson opened Pink Lane opposite Central Station in 2012 and built it into something structurally unusual: a collective in which every manager holds a stake and a say — the shop's own constitution, published where the loyalty cards would be — with the roasting done in-house at the sister Colour Coffee operation in Sandyford, disclosed here, and a Real Living Wage certification underwriting the politics. The 2026 lists have it among the UK's best coffee shops with a European ranking in contention, which for a room this size opposite a railway station is a heavy medal count. Newcastle's speciality scene started here; the trains are incidental.
