Blackfriars operates inside a former 13th-century Dominican friary refectory near Newcastle's city centre, and is often cited as the oldest purpose-built dining room still in use in the UK. The current restaurant business was established in 2001 by Andy and Sam Hook, serving a seasonal British menu of regional produce in a vaulted stone hall, with a separate parlour bar and courtyard for drinks.
