Arlo is run by chef-owner Lucas Morrison and his wife Susan on Brentwood Avenue in West Jesmond, serving as a daytime café and brunch spot before turning into an evening bistro with bar service. Lucas's career took in kitchens in New Zealand, Italy and South Africa, an itinerary that shows up in a menu built around locally sourced, seasonal, home-cooked food. An in-house bakery turns out cakes, scones, quiches and celebration cakes each morning. The dining room mixes Alpine-style timber panelling with retro furniture picked up second-hand, a look that sets it apart from the chain cafés nearby. The kitchen keeps different hours through the week, closing early on quieter days and running later from Wednesday to Saturday.
