Isle of Barra Distillers runs what it describes as Scotland's most westerly distillery from a business estate above Castlebay harbour. The family-run company distilled its first batch of gin in August 2017 and has since added rum, vodka and a whisky in progress. Barra Atlantic Gin is distilled using seventeen botanicals foraged from the island's shores and machair, and the range has picked up gold medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and awards at the Scottish Rum Festival & Drinks Awards. It remains a small, single-site operation, selling through its own shop, website and a limited number of island stockists rather than wide national distribution. Barra is reached by ferry or by a short flight timed to the tide on the cockleshell beach at Traigh Mhòr, and the distillery sits close to Kisimul Castle on Castlebay's small harbourfront.
