Kaffeehaus is run by Bernhard and Carina Nausner, a father-and-daughter team who grew up with the filter-coffee culture of Austria and Germany and first opened a café, Kaffeehaus Amadeus, in Lanchester in 2013. In June 2020 they founded Kaffeehaus Coffee Roasters on Sacriston Industrial Estate, becoming Durham's first coffee roastery. The pair roast single-origin beans in small batches and supply cafés and home customers around the country, while also running barista and home-brewing courses from the same unit. Their Heritage Range names blends after North East landmarks, with one blend named for Causey Arch, said to be the oldest surviving railway bridge in the world. The shop sells beans direct from the roaster on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, alongside training sessions for people wanting to set up their own coffee business.
