Lacada is a co-operative brewery in Portrush: what began as a father-and-son nano-brewery registered in 2014 as an industrial and provident society, and has since grown to more than four hundred co-owners, each with one equal vote. Members steer it, and in recent years steered it back on course when it needed it — a canning line bought, direction reclaimed, a brewery genuinely run by the people who care about it. It brews a rotating range and pours it in a taproom on Victoria Street at the weekend. Co-operatives UK holds it up as a case study; on the ground it is simply the town's brewery, owned by the town.
