Paul and Jacine Rutasikwa founded Matugga in 2018, distilling rum on the Brucefield Industrial Estate in Livingston after Paul studied brewing and distilling at Heriot-Watt University. The range covers white, spiced and cask-aged pure single rums, produced on copper stills: Matugga Spiced is infused with a Masala Chai blend of botanicals, while Matugga Golden matures in ex-Bourbon casks. The brand takes its name and inspiration from the couple's East African connections, and it remains a small independent producer rather than a contract label. Tours run at the site by appointment, taking in the still house and production floor before a guided tasting of the range and craft cocktails, with a discount at the shop; sessions are for over-18s only. It is a short taxi ride from Livingston North and Livingston South stations, with parking on site.
