R & I MacDonald Kiltmakers has traded from Main Street in West Calder for well over sixty years, hand-sewing kilts for customers across Scotland and overseas. The family business, incorporated as Macdonald Kiltmakers Ltd (Companies House SC392276), makes every kilt fully hand-sewn rather than machine-stitched, working to individual measurements for made-to-measure Highland dress. Alongside kilt-making, the workshop supplies and hires full Highland outfits for men and boys, hand-sewn dancers' kilts, tartan plaids and ladies' kilted skirts, and carries out kilt alterations and repairs. Customers can buy or hire, which makes the shop a resource for weddings, Highland dancing competitions and everyday Highland dress rather than costume hire alone. The workshop keeps regular high-street hours through the week, including a Monday opening from 9.30am with a lunchtime break. It remains an independent, single-site kiltmaker still run by the MacDonald family, rather than part of a national Highland-wear retail chain.
