Mission Gallery occupies a former seamen's church in Swansea's Maritime Quarter, and has shown contemporary art and craft there, free to enter, since it became independent in 1992. It is run not for profit — a company limited by guarantee with a voluntary board — which keeps it free of both commercial and council control, and lets it back the work and makers a safer institution might not. Alongside changing exhibitions it runs a craft space selling the work of Welsh makers. In a city whose main gallery is council-run, Mission is the independent alternative: smaller, sharper, and answerable only to the art. Wednesday to Saturday, and worth the walk to the water.
