Richard Meyrick builds handmade acoustic guitars from a small workshop on the lower ground floor of the Old Workhouse on Union Road in Abergavenny, a Grade II listed building put up in 1837 as the town's Poor Law union workhouse and long since converted to other uses. Alongside building instruments to order, he repairs, sets up and adjusts guitars, mandolins, ukuleles and bouzoukis brought in by players from across the region, and runs courses in which a student builds their own instrument under his guidance over a series of sessions. The workshop is a single, one-person operation rather than a factory, so turnaround on custom builds and repairs depends on what else is on the bench. Visits are generally by appointment, arranged directly with Richard by phone or email.
