George Young trained at Dundee art college and taught pottery at Peebles High School before opening his own workshop, Church Square Ceramics, in St Andrews town centre in 1984. He later moved his pottery to South Flisk in the hamlet of Blebo Craigs, midway between St Andrews and Cupar, where he still throws stoneware and porcelain entirely by hand. The range covers bowls, jugs, mugs, teapots, goblets, lighting and personalised commissions, along with hand-lettering work for gifts and signage. Young runs weekend introductory pottery courses from the rural studio for visitors wanting to try the wheel themselves. Pieces are sold directly from the workshop and through the pottery's own website. The studio is listed within the Scottish Potters Association's network of working ceramicists and has traded from this corner of Fife countryside for four decades under the same maker, one of a dwindling number of Fife potteries still run by its founder.
