The Bechelli family has run the Allanwater Cafe on Henderson Street for more than one hundred and twenty years, an unusually long stretch on a street where chain competitors, including a nearby Costa, have opened and closed within a fraction of that time. The cafe sits close to the bridge over the Allan Water, the river that gives Bridge of Allan its name, and keeps frying fish to order alongside a wide ice cream selection that The Times has ranked among Scotland's best. Staff know regulars well enough to have their order ready before it is asked for, and the till still rings up scoops and tubs alongside fish suppers on any given afternoon. The cafe is closed on Tuesdays.
