The Mechanical Art and Design Museum, known as the MAD Museum, occupies a building at 4-5 Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, sited above a shop and between two others on the town's main shopping street. It opened in March 2012 as the only museum of its kind in the UK, showing more than a hundred pieces of kinetic art and automata by artists working in the field, from marble-run machines to mechanical birds and sand-drawing tables. Nearly everything on display can be set in motion by visitors, and the collection is arranged to appeal to both casual visitors and school groups studying art, physics, design and technology. The museum is run by a family based in nearby Kenilworth rather than a national trust or council body, making it one of the few privately owned museums in the town.
