Union Vinyl is Inverness's only dedicated independent record shop, opened by Nigel Graham in May 2014 on Union Street before moving a few years later to its current premises on Market Brae Steps. The shop deals mainly in second-hand vinyl, with stock ranging from around five pounds to over a hundred for rarer pressings, alongside some new releases. Graham built the business from his own record collecting, and it has become a fixture of the city's music scene, hosting vinyl club nights and in-store sessions where visiting DJs and collectors talk through their own selections. The shop draws custom from touring musicians and long-standing collectors as well as passing shoppers on the Steps, a narrow lane linking the High Street to Academy Street. It remains a single small shop rather than a chain; Graham has spoken of a related vintage clothing and vinyl outlet in Nairn, but the Market Brae Steps shop is the original and main site.
