40 Winks occupies a Victorian townhouse on South Street in Durham, set on the riverbank across the Wear from the cathedral and castle, with several rooms looking directly onto that view. The Grade II listed building was refurbished as a boutique guesthouse, keeping period cornicing and sash windows while adding modern bathrooms and furnishings. It has nine individually styled en-suite rooms, including a handful of larger suites, with king or super-king beds and Molton Brown toiletries as standard. A cooked-to-order breakfast is served each morning between half past seven and half past nine, included in bed-and-breakfast rates or bookable separately with a room-only stay. The guesthouse operates as a single independent property rather than as part of a hotel group, a short walk from the Bailey and the Cathedral precinct.
