A.S. Porter Family Butchers trades from Shore Street in Bowmore, supplied largely by the Porter family's own farm on Islay, which raises the beef and lamb sold across the counter. Alongside prime cuts, sausages and cured meats made on site, the shop stocks a run of fresh fruit and vegetables that stretches to aubergines, pomegranates and coconuts, unusual stock for an island butcher. Staff take orders for hampers and special cuts and know most customers by name, a habit of small-island shopkeeping that has carried on alongside the more varied modern stock. The shop closes on Sundays and Mondays and keeps to a working week built around the Tuesday to Saturday trade typical of Islay's villages.
