Bute Museum stands on Stuart Street in Rothesay, in a building the 4th Marquess of Bute had purpose-built for the Buteshire Natural History Society, which opened its doors in 1927. The society itself formed in 1905, taking on the collections of an earlier archaeological and natural history body, and its members still supply the volunteers who staff the museum today under a separate board of trustees. Displays run from Neolithic finds and Bronze Age burials through to the natural history, geology, flora and fauna of Bute, despite the natural-history name covering a broader archaeological remit. The museum closes through December and January for routine maintenance and keeps reduced afternoon hours over the winter months, reopening fuller hours through the summer season.
