Beanies has traded as a workers' co-operative since 1986, moving from its first premises in Hillsborough through a converted terrace in Walkley before settling at 1 Barber Road in Crookesmoor. Every member is paid the same hourly rate and shares in running the shop, which stocks what it calls the largest independent organic vegetable section in the region alongside bread, groceries and chilled goods. A weekly organic veg box scheme starts at just over thirteen pounds and draws a loyal base of local subscribers. All stock is vegan or vegetarian, with organic and Fairtrade ranges prioritised over cheaper alternatives. The shop keeps a car park and step-free access, unusual for a site this size, and has become a fixture for students and families in the university-adjacent streets nearby. It remains entirely independent of any supermarket or franchise ownership, run solely by its members.
