Beanies has been a workers' co-operative since 1986 — owned equally by the full-timers who run it, no shareholders, profits back into the shelves — and forty years of that model have carried it from Hillsborough through Walkley to its Crookesmoor corner, where it claims the title of Yorkshire's largest organic greengrocer with Soil Association certification to underwrite the word organic. The veg boxes feed half the university's staff rooms, the wholefoods aisles do the bulk-and-refill economy at proper depth, and the co-op marked its fortieth year with the quiet satisfaction of a structure that outlived every prediction made about it.
