Chequers was opened by Ian Allott in June 2013 in a former tailor's shop tucked behind Beverley's Saturday Market, among the first micropubs to open in the East Riding. The pub is a single small room over two floors, with a modest outdoor drinking area, and there is no music, television or fruit machines to interrupt conversation. Up to five cask ales from regional breweries are served from handpull alongside eight craft keg lines and as many as six traditional ciders and perries. A Thursday games night and a craft night on alternate Mondays give the pub a regular rhythm beyond ordinary drinking hours. It stays closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, opening from mid-afternoon on the remaining five days of the week.
