Cross Lanes was opened in October 2011 by Peter and Sue Coverdale, who bought a derelict pig and poultry farm at Brignall, just off the A66 west of Barnard Castle, and turned it into an organic farm shop, butchery and cafe-restaurant. The shop sells organic fruit and vegetables, store-cupboard goods and local crafts, and the butcher's counter handles organic grass-fed beef among other meats. A delicatessen carries cheeses, cooked meats and frozen ready meals, while the restaurant cooks with produce from the shop. There is also a small horticulture side to the site. It trades from the single Brignall site and works to support other local producers across Teesdale. The buildings were converted with an emphasis on low environmental impact.
