The Dog Inn stands on a corner site next to Whalley's parish churchyard, built of local stone with a Dalmatian still painted on its sign, a nod to the pub's earlier name, The Spotted Dog. Reverend Canon Norman Atty and his wife Christine have run the pub since 1992, building a reputation for six handpulls of constantly rotating cask ales sourced mainly from small breweries rather than a fixed house list. Food is served at lunchtime only, from noon to 2pm, with the pub open through the afternoon and evening for drinking. The interior keeps a collection of hunting and sporting memorabilia on its walls, and a rear patio looks over the churchyard. A first-Thursday-of-the-month open mic night and a running charity quiz are among its regular fixtures. The pub is independently run rather than part of a managed group, trading under the same family for more than three decades.
