Ryan Casey opened Downriver Coffee Roasters in 2024 after relocating from New York to Inverclyde with her wife during the pandemic. She worked as a barista through her American undergraduate years, where a wholesale partner, Counter Culture, shaped her approach to sourcing and quality. Downriver operates from a 1,750 square foot unit at Kelburn Business Park in Port Glasgow, understood to be the first specialty coffee roastery based in Inverclyde. Beans are roasted in small batches and sold online and through local stockists, with an emphasis on traceability to individual producers. Casey took the long-term lease at the end of 2023 and opened the following spring. The name refers to the roastery's position downriver on the Clyde. There is no café on site; coffee is sold in bags for home brewing or via wholesale accounts.
