Joe Allan has run Gear Bikes from 19 Gibson Street, close to Kelvingrove Park and the University of Glasgow, since 1998. The shop sells new bikes for adults and children from brands including Ridgeback, Genesis, GT, Pashley and Frog, alongside a walk-in workshop that handles punctures, servicing, e-bike repairs and wheel building without needing a booking. Bike hire is also available for visitors wanting to cover the West End or the canal and river paths without owning a bike. Allan works alongside a small long-serving team, including mechanics Iain, Dougie and Paddy, and the shop has kept the same Gibson Street unit throughout its history rather than expanding to other sites. The shop trades seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday afternoons. It has become a fixture for local cyclists needing repairs done same-day rather than booked weeks in advance.
