Holyrood Distillery occupies a restored nineteenth-century railway goods shed on St Leonard's Lane, a short walk from Holyrood Park, and was the first new whisky distillery to open in central Edinburgh in almost a hundred years when it began production in 2019. It was founded by Rob and Kelly Carpenter, previously involved with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Canada, together with David Robertson, formerly of Macallan. The distillery makes single malt whisky, released under names including Arrival, Embra, Ambir and Pitch, and a gin called Height of Arrows, alongside rum and other spirits. Visitors can take a guided tour through the distilling process, followed by tastings in the on-site bar, and buy bottles exclusive to the distillery in the attached shop. It was named Global Distiller of the Year at the 2024 World Whisky Awards.
