Jenni Doherty has run Little Acorns on Great James' Street in Derry since 2011, and built it into the largest independent bookshop in the north-west of Ireland — some seventy-five thousand new and second-hand titles, sorted by a bookseller who reads. It is a one-woman shop by ownership and a landmark by reputation: An Post Irish Bookshop of the Year in 2024, and a fixture of the city's literary life, with a typewriter museum promised as an extension. In a trade that has thinned everywhere, Doherty's answer has been range and knowledge, floor to ceiling. A proper bookshop, run by someone who could not be anything but a bookseller.
