The Magic Lantern occupies a building on Corbett Square in Tywyn that opened in 1893 as the town's assembly room, with the first recorded film screening there in 1901, a newsreel of the Boer War. Renamed several times over the following century and most recently in 2012, the single-screen cinema is run today as an independent, locally owned business rather than part of a chain. It shows current releases alongside occasional community events, including a Christmas Day screening held for people who might otherwise spend the day alone.
