A radical bookshop founded in 1974 and run since the early eighties as a women's workers' co-operative — no boss, no owner, tasks and decisions shared, everyone on the same living wage, profits staying in the shop. It has held 96 Bold Street through every cycle of that street's reinvention, selling politics, history, fiction and community publishing that the chains never stocked and the algorithms never surface. Fifty years is a long time for a bookshop with no proprietor; it turns out the proprietor was the point all along.
