News From Nowhere has traded at 96 Bold Street since 1996, having begun in 1974 when Bob and Maggie Dent started selling radical literature in Liverpool. It operates as a workers' co-operative, with no boss and no single owner, staff sharing tasks and decisions and drawing equal, living-wage pay. Stock runs through feminism, anti-racism, LGBT+ writing, workers' rights and environmental politics, alongside a general fiction section, and the co-operative describes itself as not-for-profit, ploughing takings back into stock and running costs rather than dividends. The shop moved into its current Bold Street premises after a local fundraising campaign covered the cost, a detail the co-operative still points to as proof of the shop's community backing. It takes its name from William Morris's utopian novel. It remains one of the few bookshops in the country still run entirely along collective lines.
