Taigh Chearsabhagh occupies a harbourside building in Lochmaddy dating from 1741, first used as an inn and later a post office, house and workshop before its conversion into a museum and arts centre in 1993. The trust that runs it holds a photographic archive and local artefacts alongside a working gallery, print and darkroom studios, and a cafe serving lunches and home baking with a view across the water to Harris. Lochmaddy's Post Office still operates from within the building. It hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, Gaelic literary events and small festivals, and serves as the North Uist base for Lews Castle College's art school, where students can take short courses or study for a degree in fine art. The centre is wheelchair accessible and free to enter, funded as a charity rather than run for profit.
