The Bear reopened on Camberwell New Road in May 2023 under new owners Teddy Roberts and Joe Sherratt. The pub had closed in 2017, when its upper floors were converted into flats, leaving the ground floor empty until the pair took on the lease. Joe Sherratt had worked at Petrus under Marcus Wareing and as head chef at Adam Byatt's Trinity before becoming known for opening Naughty Piglets in Brixton. The two run the pub on a lease, trading independently of any brewery tie, and made a point of tending bar themselves most nights through their first year. Cask ale sits alongside a sizeable wine list and a late licence that keeps the room open past the hours of most nearby pubs. A weekly open vinyl session and a Sunday quiz draw a regular crowd, and dogs are welcome.
