The Bunker has occupied a Victorian former bakery at 29 Stockton Road since 1982, making it one of Sunderland's longest-running music institutions. Run as a not-for-profit community interest company, it combines seventeen rehearsal and recording studios with a performance space and tuition in guitar, bass, drums, piano, ukulele, singing and music production. The building has hosted touring acts over the decades and served as a proving ground for local bands including The Futureheads and Field Music. Today it operates seven days a week, with much of its work aimed at giving young and first-time musicians affordable access to space and equipment. Gigs, showcases and community sessions run alongside the teaching and studio hire, keeping the venue central to the city's grassroots scene rather than trading on its history alone.
