This timber-framed building on Saffron Walden's High Street dates from around 1580, when its western end was built as a shop around a corner oak post still visible in the structure today. Oliver Cromwell stayed here for three weeks in May 1647 while Parliamentary officers used the town as New Model Army headquarters. The building fell into disrepair before a 660,000 pound restoration returned it to use as an inn, reopening in June 2012 in time for the Diamond Jubilee. It now runs as an independent hotel and restaurant with ten individually designed bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, and Nespresso machines or slipper baths in selected rooms. Breakfast is included in every stay and served in the restaurant, which also serves pub classics, Sunday roasts and steaks through the week.
