The Cumberland Arms stands above the Ouseburn valley, first licensed in 1862 and rebuilt in 1899, and has long been one of the homes of Newcastle's folk and traditional-music scene — clog dancing, sessions, singarounds, a pub that doubles as a cultural institution. It is independently run, with no brewery or pub-company tie in any record, and has been shaped for two decades by an owner set on preserving the building.
