The Fine Wine Company has traded from Portobello High Street since Adam Rankine founded it in 2002, building relationships directly with smaller wine producers rather than buying through large distributors. The shop specialises in wine sold by the case alongside a tighter shelf of craft beers, malt whiskies and Scottish gins, and staff talk customers through unfamiliar bottles rather than simply pointing at shelf labels. The website supplements the shop rather than replacing it, with mixed cases built to order for weddings and parties. The premises are modest, a single narrow room on the High Street with stock stacked close to the ceiling, reflecting a business built on turnover and repeat custom rather than retail spectacle. After more than two decades on the same stretch of Portobello, Rankine remains hands-on, still choosing much of the range personally alongside a small team.
