Pippa Leaver founded THE JQ SET in 2018 as a teaching studio in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, the district long known as the largest concentration of jewellery manufacturers in Europe. Beginners' and improvers' courses run on Monday evenings and Saturday daytimes, capped at ten students per class with no mixing of abilities, and tools and materials are included in the course fee. The studio also rents bench space to four independent jewellery designers who work alongside the classes during the week. Students leave each course having made their own pieces, from stacking rings to pendants, using traditional metalwork hand skills rather than casting. Courses are aimed equally at hobbyists and at people testing out a career change into the trade. Gift vouchers are available for one-off taster sessions.
