Sunrise Bakery has operated from Woodland Street in Smethwick since 1966, when Herman Drummond and William Lamont rented a room behind a row of shops to bake hardo bread, spice buns and bulla cake for the area's growing Caribbean community. The business bought its current site within fifteen years of opening and later extended it to keep pace with demand. It is now run by Herman's son, Errol Drummond, and grandson, Daniel Drummond, and describes itself as the largest supplier of Caribbean artisan bread in the UK, though the Woodland Street counter still sells directly to walk-in customers alongside its wholesale trade. The shop opens from nine until five, six days a week, and stocks coco bread, festival and cakes made on the premises each morning.
