The Mitre

The Mitre occupies the corner of Mitre Street in Buckingham, on a site marked on John Speed's map of the town from 1610; the adjoining Mitre Cottage dates to around 1420. Records show the pub once paid an annual Quit Rent of eight pence to the Lord of the Manor. Renovation work in 2012 exposed fragments of the original thatched roof inside the upper-floor walls, from before the building gained its current brick frontage in the 17th or 18th century. Pete has run the pub since buying it in 2017, since when the cellar cooling system, oak bar and toilets have all been replaced. As a free house it isn't tied to any brewery, and pours four to five changing cask ales rather than a fixed range, with no food menu. It is the only independently owned and run pub in Buckingham, and was named Buckinghamshire CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2025, adding to four Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch wins since 2015.
