Gauntleys of Nottingham trades from the Exchange Arcade at 4 High Street in the city centre, and dates its founding to 1880, when Thomas Fox Gauntley was established in a tobacco partnership by his father. Over the following century the firm expanded to several city branches and out-of-town concessions, but consolidated to its present single High Street shop around 1970 after the demolition of its former Long Row premises. In the mid-1980s, John Gauntley took over from his father and added fine wines and spirits to the tobacco and cigar trade, a range still overseen today by a dedicated wine buyer and spirits buyer. Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, the shop deals directly with smaller growers and producers, and has built a reputation for identifying names before they become well known elsewhere.
