McNaughtan's has traded off Leith Walk since Major John and Marjorie McNaughtan opened it in 1957, which makes it Scotland's oldest surviving second-hand and antiquarian bookshop. Since 2015 it has been owned by Derek Walker and Anna Fomicheva, both formerly of Blackwell's in Oxford, who have kept it exactly what it should be: a serious antiquarian shop, well-chosen and well-kept, with a gallery alongside. Members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, they deal in the good stuff — Scottish books, literature, the rare and the collectable — across seven days a week. In a city full of bookshops, this is the one with the deepest roots.
