Moray Playhouse has shown films on Elgin's High Street since it opened on 24 November 1932, designed by architect Alister G. Macdonald, son of the prime minister of the day. The auditorium originally seated over 1,500 people; a 1986 conversion split it into a 330-seat Screen 1 in the old stalls and a 220-seat Screen 2 in the former balcony, with a third, smaller screen added later. The cinema is run by Cairnstar Limited, whose director Ronald Farquharson has held the role since 2001. Original Art Deco details remain in the shell-shaped wall lights and stepped floor of the main auditorium. The box office opens Wednesday to Friday from 11.30am to 9.30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to 9pm, with doors opening half an hour before the first screening.
