Elgin Museum on the High Street has operated since 1843, run throughout by the Moray Society, a charity that receives no council funding and depends on donations, grants and volunteers. Housed in a category A-listed Italianate building at the east end of the High Street, it holds more than 36,000 objects, including an internationally recognised collection of fish and reptile fossils from Moray and a set of Pictish carved stones. An upstairs Mezzanine Gallery gives regional artists space to show and sell work, and the museum mounts new exhibitions from its own holdings each year. Structural constraints in the historic building currently limit general opening, so visits are arranged by appointment with three days' notice. Entry remains free throughout.
