Gordon & MacPhail was established as a grocer and wine merchant on Elgin's South Street in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail; John Urquhart joined within the year and his descendants have run the firm for four generations since. While the historic South Street building undergoes a lengthy renovation, the retail shop and tasting rooms trade from The Courtyard at Johnstons of Elgin on Newmill Road, opened in February 2025. The shop combines a delicatessen and wine merchant counter with a dedicated whisky room stocking more than a thousand single malts, many bottled by the firm under its own labels. Private tastings for up to eight people run daily at 11am and 2.30pm by booking. The shop opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and is closed on Sundays.
