Tom Sobey started roasting in Cornwall in 2004 — the county's first commercially roasted speciality coffee — and Origin has grown into one of Europe's leading speciality roasters without leaving home: the roastery, expanded to 10,000 square feet in its twentieth year, sits at the edge of Porthleven with a café at one end and a viewing window onto the machines. More than ninety per cent of the green coffee is bought direct, through farmer relationships going back to 2008. B Corp certified since 2020, and named best speciality roaster at the European Coffee Awards in 2023, then again the following year. Sobey remains the majority owner, having sold a first minority stake in 2023 to fund the next stretch. The café pours what was roasted a few metres away, and a public cupping runs as a bookable tasting at £15 a head.
