Paul Rothe opened his delicatessen at 35 Marylebone Lane on 2 August 1900, selling imported German groceries to a street of tradesmen. His son Robert added the row of formica-topped tables that customers still queue for at lunch, and Paul Rothe Jr took over the counter from his father in 1984 after joining the business in 1969. The shop now runs to fourth-generation family management, building sandwiches to order from more than thirty fillings and seven breads while soup simmers behind the counter. Shelves stock the family's own marmalades and chutneys alongside tins imported much the way they always were.
