The Golden Hind has served fried fish from 71a-73 Marylebone Lane since 1914, making it one of the longest-running fish and chip shops in the West End. Fish arrives daily from Grimsby and is fried to order in a homemade batter, served with hand-cut chips in a dining room that keeps old Formica tables and tiled walls. The current proprietor is a second Greek-Cypriot owner who took over from the previous family and has kept the same head chef, now in his third decade at the fryer, providing continuity through the change of hands. The menu runs to the traditional range of cod, haddock and plaice, scampi, and mushy peas, alongside a short wine list. It operates as a sit-down restaurant rather than a takeaway counter, with table service at lunch and dinner, and remains licensed to sell alcohol, a rarity granted to the original shop in the early twentieth century.
